Guzman Y Gomez. Grill’d. Sushi Train. Nando’s. Hog’s Breath Cafe. Oh and let’s not forget about Toscani’s. These are the usual suspects you’ll find lurking within the dining precinct at your nearest shopping centre. And until two years ago Westfield Garden City was no exception. Thankfully someone saw the light and now, this outdoor dining precinct resembles a Mediterranean resort complete with swaying palms, a water feature and deck chairs. There are also several new restaurants to choose from but The Palms Bar and Grill would have to be one of our favourite places to enjoy alfresco lunch in the sunshine.
The Palms drew us in with its open-plan design, wooden light fixtures and brightly coloured decor. We were seated on the blue and white-cushioned bench which runs along the water feature – a great spot to bask in the afternoon sun. With drinks in hand (side note: the cranberry juice may look delicious but was anything but) we pondered the menu. The focus here is very much on shared food with bites, small plates, bigger plates, and a variety of grilled meats on offer. So much deliciousness, so little gastric space. But as usual, we ordered enough food for a small army.
First up was lightly fried baby calamari with lemon – tender, well seasoned and devoured before I could photograph it. Dish #2 was grilled chermoula-spiced prawns with roasted garlic and hummus which was equally delicious. I have a thing for toasted cheese sandwiches so I couldn’t really say no to the special of the day: a jamon and manchego toastie with date chutney. It was so good 🙂 The boy ordered crispy duck with quinoa, hazelnut and citrus salad which I just had to sample as well (for research purposes, obviously): a lovely combination with a hint of nuttiness.
I’ll be sharing my other favourite eating spots within Garden City in the coming few months so don’t forget to check back. Maybe I’ll see you there sometime soon? 🙂
